The Civil Defense in Riyadh has issued warning to citizens and residents to take maximum precautions against the fluctuating severe weather conditions in the region.
The Presidency of Meteorology and Environment, (PME) said on Monday that there will be sudden change in the weather conditions in Riyadh on Monday and Tuesday.
A number of areas in the region could experience heavy rains in the coming days. There will be a gradual decrease in temperatures, the report said.
Major Mohammed Al-Hammadi, spokesman for the Civil Defense in Riyadh, said that motorists should take special care while driving and people should avoid going out during heavy rains. “They should keep away from electric wires and avoid staying under trees during heavy downpours,” he noted, advising people not to use mobile phones during lightning and thunder.
Besides Riyadh, the southern part of the Kingdom, such as Najran, will also be affected by the transitional climate. In addition, there will be rains and thunderstorms in Al-Jouf, Northern Border, Tabuk and Hail which will extend to Al-Qassim region and Hafr Al-Batin. It is predicted that the coastal parts of Makkah and Madinah will also be affected by the anticipated rains.
According to the spokesman, the Civil Defense in Riyadh has drawn up a strategic plan to meet all eventualities in the event of flooding and rains in the region.
A total of 180 teams comprising 720 officers have been deployed to attend to the emergency needs of those in distress due to inclement weather. The teams will be equipped with 330 machines to pump water out of flooded areas.
The plans are being prepared in coordination with the Riyadh municipality headed by Mayor Ibrahim bin Mohamed Al-Sultan.
This year, authorities will follow the SCADA electronic system to monitor rising water levels in reservoirs.
People have been advised to call the toll-free number, 940, in any emergency during the rains.
