Properties of Saudis in Syria ‘safe’
The properties of Saudi citizens in Syria are safe, said Sami Al-Saleh, Saudi ambassador to Jordan.
“Houses and farms are still being maintained and have been registered via official documents since the Saudi Embassy had been established in Damascus,” he said.
“Syrian prisons did not have a single Saudi in them before the clashes started, but we have since faced difficulties getting information on missing persons since there are no humanitarian or security organizations operating inside Syria.”
Al-Saleh was optimistic about Saudi fighters coming back home.
“We have had 10 Saudis surrendering to authorities after joining the war in Syria,” said Saleh. “The embassy constantly follows up on the status of Saudi citizens, whether in Jordan, Syria or Iraq.”
“Saudi citizens born to Syrian mothers are being looked after by the embassy and the Saudi Charitable Society for the Welfare of Saudi Families Abroad (Awasser) and we have provided accommodation and monthly financial assistance to these citizens and those born to Jordanian women,” he said.
Al-Saleh assured the media that Saudis being held in Iraq are being taken care of.
“The embassy regularly follows up on the conditions of Saudi prisoners in Iraq via communication with the Iraqi Embassy in Amman and the Red Crescent,” he said. “There are currently 62 Saudi prisoners detained in Iraqi prisons.”
“We continuously urge Saudis studying in Jordan to steer clear of suspicious groups and activities through liaising with student clubs and representatives,” he said.
The embassy had earlier issued a statement on its website warning Saudis not to fall victim to fraud.
“Saudi businessmen who visit Jordan for investment and trade often fall victim to fraud,” he explained, adding: “We strongly advise our citizens to seek legal consultation here in the embassy free of charge.”
The embassy in Amman has issued a total of 654,000 Umrah and visit visas to the Kingdom for Jordanians, Iraqis, Syrians and Palestinians and handled 349 cases of illness over the last six months.
